Chapter 43
Dr. Bertelli finished his notes on a patientâs file and handed it to his nurse Rosie with instructions about a prescription.
âIs that the last one, Rosie?â
Rosie smiled, taking the folder from Dinoâs hand. âYes sir. The next appointment is not until two. You should get away from this place for a while. Take Lindsay to lunch and I donât mean just a quick burger at McDonaldâs. You could use the break. Peter will be here.â
Dino grinned. âSounds like good medical advice to me, Doctor Rosie.â He made his nurse crack a big smile. âI guess Peter can handle things. Heâs not bad for an intern.â
âYeah, Peterâs good. The kids sure like him, as I said they would. I had my doubts about him at first, but he grows on you.â
âThat he does. Itâs hard not to like him. I think itâs that childlike innocence he seems to emanate. Heâs got such a cheery attitude, taking life as it comes.â
âPeter knows how to pace himself, but you work too hard. Seriously Doc, go now or Iâll tell Hank youâve skipped lunch again.â Rosie pointed her wagging finger at him.
âHeaven forbid, I donât want to get Hank on my case. Youâre tough enough.â Dino scanned the waiting room. âWhere is Lindsay anyway? I thought she was going over our bills from last week?â
âSheâs in your apartment. It was noisy in here. I hope you donât mind, I let her use your desk.â
âHeck, no.â Dino reached inside the pocket of his white coat and pulled out a velvet jewelry box. âHey Rosie, I didnât get a chance to show you what I got Lindsay for her birthday. Tony had it sent over. He helped me pick it out.â
Dino slowly opened the box, revealing a fine gold necklace with a pendent shaped into the form of two hearts intertwined. A diamond sat in the middle where the hearts met. Rosieâs eyes widened.
âO-o-o-o, thatâs pretty, Doc. I didnât know you had such excellent taste.â
âVery funny. And yes, youâre right, I donât. Tony has the excellent taste and style. He picks out all the jewelry for his wife, Cassie. He said this was exactly right for where our relationship is now.â
Rosie grinned. âOh, and what is that?â
Dino shut the box and returned it to his pocket. âWell, I think itâs getting serious.â Dino pulled Rosieâs arm and they sat down together on one of the couches. âRosie, Iâve fallen in love with Lindsay. Iâm going to tell her on her birthday and give her this. I hope she feels the same. I think she does.â
Rosie crossed her chest with both arms and gave Dino a determined stare. âItâs about time you saw the writing on the wall. We were all wondering when you two would see what we all see.â
Dino sat back against the couch and arched his eyebrows. âOh really. I guess weâre not hiding anything from you guys. Is that what Hank and Mark think too?â
âUh duh, of course. So does Peter, and heâs new around here.
